Podcasting has possible one of the largest audiences available for any entertainment medium. TV requires investment of time, video games more so, and along with that reading is, for most people, a task that requires focus. There are the people who will happily have TV on in the background whilst they do something else, but in that case the show is obviously not good enough and so why bother? Podcasts can be listened to whilst walking, at the gym, cleaning, or doing other such activities. The time investment is subjugated and as such everybody, even those who claim ‘not to have a commute’ have some time somewhere to listen to a podcast or two in the week.

I spent a week logging the time I have spent listening to podcasts. The total time spent on being told about a product is relatively tiny, and with a lot of the podcasts not even trying to sell anything, it’s remarkable how a lot of it sustains itself. Something that I love about podcasts is that people do it because they care.

There aren't enough serious looks at the world of podcasting, nor are there enough critical articles about the best and worst podcasts out there and Apple's own system isn't particularly brilliant when it comes to allowing you to discover the next show that you'll fall in love with. Personally I see podcasting as a completely valid medium, on par with anything else we would choose to enjoy (books, movies etc.).
